According to this interesting post from Altmetrics.org, conventional scholarly content filtering using Peer-Review, Citation and the Journal Impact Factor (JIF) metrics may no longer be delivering the required results.
With the rise of Online Reference Managers and the use of Social Media tools such as Twitter and the many Blogs that abound, using Altmetrics offers an ability to allow a crowdsourcing of the peer-review process along with many other benefits discussed in the post.
There is still speculation that Altmetrics really can deliver benefits for better filtering of information; however, this post does at least offer some good insights into how the use of Altmetrics could improve scholarly content discoverability.
